Shoaib Hussain: From a visa agent to a suspected Pakistani spy

Shoaib Hussain, who allegedly helped a diplomat posted in the Pakistan High Commission here recruit spies, worked for other ISI agents as well, police sources said.

The 26-year-old was arrested by Delhi Police crime branch on Thursday night from Jodhpur and brought here.

Three Indians, all hailing from Rajasthan, were arrested for allegedly passing on secret information about border deployment to a diplomat, Mehmood Akhtar, who worked for the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and is an assistant in the high commission’s trade section.

Sources said Shoaib, a passport and visa agent, not only worked for Akhtar but other ISI operatives as well.

“During questioning, Shoaib hinted that he worked for ISI operatives posted in different parts of the country. We are still to ascertain if these people are posted in the High Commission or elsewhere,” a police source said. “We suspect it to be a big ongoing racket and more arrests are likely.”Shoaib would frequent the Pakistan High Commission with applications of people who wished to visit Pakistan to either meet their families or for trade.

During his visits, he met Akhtar, who was posted in the visa section of the High Commission.

Akhtar befriended Shoaib and asked him to rope in potential spies to work for him.

“Akhtar told Shoaib that he required persons who could easily have access to army and paramilitary bases. Shoaib then went through visa applications and called few people for a general interaction. He then zeroed in on Maulana Ramzan Khan, who worked as a teacher at a local mosque, and Subhash Jangir, a vegetable vendor, both residents of Nagaur in Rajasthan, for the job,” police sources said.

Akhtar offered the men good sums of money for work. Sources said Shoaib also charged between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh for roping in people for the spying job.
